Abstract

This study explores instructional process, individual performance, and attainments on public speaking. Classroom action research design with three cycles and 12 meetings was used.  Conducted in IAIN Surakarta on March to June 2016, it assigned 26 students of semester IV-B as subject. Check list, interview, and field notes were used as the instruments.  The analyses foused on classroom participation, individual performance, and scores on formative test. This study revealed that: (1) In Cycle I, motivation, partipation and  performance were low, mean scores of classrom participation was 64.10% (fair), individual performance 58.46 (low) and formative test 65.12 (fair); (2) In Cycle II, learning participation, encouragement and motivation increased. Average scores on classroom participation was 81,41% (good), individual performance 71,92% (fair) and formative test 74,81 (fair). (3) Cycle III achieved higher gains in participation, motivation, enrouragement, and test. Average scores on classroom participation, individual performance and formative test attainments were 83,98% (good), 81,54% (good), and 80,27 (good). The use of 14 aspects of public speaking as template and appeals of persuation from Aristoteles: ethos, pathos and logos was crucial.

Abstract

This paper is an antropological review on Dayak tradition of Huma Betang, a traditional house for Dayak community in Central Kalimantan. Huma betang or betang has a length of 30-150 meters, 10-30 meters wide and 3-5 meter high. The building uses high quality iron wood, can stand up to hundreds of years as well as anti-termite. It used to be inhabited by 100-150 people, inhabited by one big family and headed by a Pambakas Lewu. Studies on people's living in Betang Damang Tumbang Anoi Gunung Mas found several cultural values of Betang Dayak community: (1) hapsari, (2) handep, (3) belom bahadat, and (4) hapakat kula.  Hapahari is defined as a brotherhood and togetherness in life betang.  Handep is mutual help, pandohop (aid), mutual mandohop (help).  Belom bahadat (live civilized and ethical) is a rule or etiquette that govern life together, that appreciate the prevailing custom in the territories of indigenous communities concerned.  Hapakat kula (mutually agree) is a hallmark of life of the inhabitants betang. Occupants of betang held deliberations in any activities of common interest of tradition betang inhabitants since centuries ago.

Abstract

This study investigates kinship greeting in Sasaknese.  The study used ethnolinguistic approach that described aspects of relation between language and culture to maintain cultural practices and social structure of a society.  The study revealed: (1) the Sasak kinship greetings had relation to the kinship structure, having hierarchical boundaries of four generations above one’s family group chart and three generations below one’s family group chart, and are related to users’ age; (2) the custom greetings have social and cultural functions; (3) the existing condition of the use of the kinship greetings is undergoing a shifting in some areas on Lombok Island as a result of modernization. The shifting is merely occurred on the greetingforms; whereas others, which are related to the kinship structure and the users’ age, remain as the characteristic of Sasak tribe; (4) by constantly using the kinship greetings, Sasak people, have participated in preserving the cultural riches; that is the local language. This effort constitutes one of the strategies in preventing language extinction as the cultural heritage of the nation.

Abstract

 This study evaluates English matriculation program at Language Center STAIBN Tegal.  Evaluation focused on (1) objective and process of the matriculation program, (2) progress of speaking ability of the learners, and (3) benefits and obstacles of the program. This study used formative evaluation design whose steps included: defining reasons for the evaluation, selecting evaluation model, identifying source persons, planning components of evaluation,  defining questions for evaluation, planning evaluation design and schedule of implementation, data collection and analysis, and reporting the results.  Data were collected using questionnaire, observation, and interview.  This study revealed that matriculation program needs to be improved its objective and process.  Progress of speaking achievement was salient, indicated by successful implementation of cooperative learning.  Listening, reading and writing were not specified in the program. Benefits of the program indicated that students’ motivation was high, but restricted time allotments, facilities, and curriculum design appeared as chief obstacles.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the form, function and meaning of clitic in language Sasak of meno-mene dialect, using entholinguistic approach. Subjects of the study were Sasak people who spoke meno-mene dialect. Data were collected using observation, interview and introspection. Data were analyzed using constant comparative of intralingual analysis. Results of the study are as follows: (1) Form of clitic of Sasak language included phoneme /k/, /m/, /n/, /e/ and morpheme da, ta, na, KMO, and ko, (2) Preclitic: /K/, da, ta, na (3) Inclitic: /M/, /n/, /e/, KMO, and ko (4) Preclitic and inclitic; /K/, da, ta, and na, (5) Function of the clitic of Sasak language is to form pronouns in positive or negative senses, (6) Meaning of the clitic of Sasak language is to form singular and plural pronoun.

Abstract

This study is aimed to describe meaning represented in symbols of rituals of NyawE and Beras Pati in Sasak society. The study used ethnolinguistics approach, assigning native speakers of Sasak language residing in the city of Mataram.  Data were collected using observation, interviews and document analysis.  The study revealed that symbols in the tradition are identified in terms of bamboo (terEng) and palm leaf (daon nao) having spiritual meanings for the Sasak society.  Nowdays, the symbols have been prevented as the existance of Sasak tribe especially for  elderly generation.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to see illocution speech acts in an interview of the governor of Nusa Tenggara Barat in Mata Najwa talkshow. This study used content analysis as design and used transcript of the interview as source of data. Data were analyzed using qualitative approach describing kinds of illocutionary acts used by the interviewer and interviewee.  The findings of the study were all illocution appeared in the interview: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. Assertive binds speakers of truth on what it says. Directives are done with the intention that the hearers do the act referred to in the speech. Expressives function as an evaluation of the things mentioned in the speech. Declaratives state the commitmenet to status of being new.

Abstract

This study is aimed to describe synonyms of the word “to hurt” in context of Sasak language of Ngeno-ngene dialect.  The study used ethnolinguistics approach, assigning native speakers of Sasak language that spoke Ngeno-ngene dialect residing in Mamben Lauk, Wanasaba.  Data were collected using observation, interviews and document analysis.  The study revealed that vocabulary items of Sasak language using Ngeno-ngene dialect were indigenous, no reference in Bahasa Indonesia appeared in this context.  This potential can give contribution to deepen variety of diction in Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

The aims of this research is to describe turn taking pattern, adjacency pair, and transition relevance place (TRP). The research used qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected using observation and selected from the classroom interaction at the 9B graders of SMPN 2 Sambungmacan, Sragen on November 2015. The result of analysis showed that turn taking pattern followed talk shift systematically where teacher role was the initiator. Adjacency pair pattern followed 5 of 8 rules so it could not always be applied in conversation. In TRP, it applied a rule where teacher let students respond. If responses were not applicable, teachers let other turns delivering instruction and information.

Abstract

This study investigates the form and meaning of Sasak proverbs.  This study used qualitative approach, relying on semiotic analysis from Roland. Subjects of the study were 7 people of East Lombok at the age of 40 years.  Data were collected through observation and interview. The study revealed that proverbs in Sasak language have their forms and meaning.  Nine kinds of form were identified in this study and the meaning indicated denotative and connotative meaning.  The forms were constructed in terms of:  syntax, noun phrase, verbal phrase, and adjectival phrase. In addition, meaning of the proverb covered sign.
